DAT (Digital Audio Tape) is a digital recording format introduced in the 1980s, primarily designed for professional audio recording and mastering. It uses a small, 4mm wide tape, similar in size to a cassette but with digital encoding for superior sound quality. DAT provides high-resolution audio at a sampling rate of 48 kHz, offering a wider dynamic range and clearer sound than traditional analog formats like cassette tapes. It supports up to 120 minutes of audio on a single tape, making it suitable for studio recordings, field recording, and mastering. One of its key features is its ability to deliver near-CD-quality sound with low noise levels and minimal distortion. Despite its advantages, DAT was not widely adopted by consumers due to the rise of CD and digital file-based formats. It found a niche in professional audio settings, especially for archiving and mastering, before eventually being overtaken by digital file formats and other recording technologies.
