Hi8 (High 8) is an analog video cassette format introduced in the late 1980s as an improved version of the 8mm video format. It was designed to offer better video quality, with increased resolution and improved color accuracy, making it ideal for consumer camcorders. Hi8 tapes are similar in size to the original 8mm format but feature a higher-quality recording system. It offers a resolution of around 400 lines, significantly better than the standard 8mm format, and supports a higher signal-to-noise ratio for clearer video playback. Hi8 also uses a wider track width and a higher tape speed, which leads to improved overall picture and sound quality. Though it was popular for home video recording and semi-professional use throughout the 1990s, Hi8 has been largely replaced by digital formats such as MiniDV and DVD-based systems. Despite this, Hi8 still has a following among enthusiasts and for archival purposes.
