Video8 is an analog video format introduced by Sony in 1985 as a compact alternative to the larger VHS and Betamax formats. It uses an 8mm tape, offering a smaller cassette size and portability, making it ideal for consumer camcorders. Video8 delivers standard-definition video, with a resolution of around 240 lines, which was a significant improvement over VHS for its time. It was widely popular for home video recording in the late 1980s and early 1990s due to its affordability and ease of use. The format was eventually replaced by more advanced systems, such as Hi8 and Digital8, which offered higher video quality and digital capabilities. Despite being overtaken by newer formats, Video8 was an essential stepping stone in the evolution of consumer video technology. It remains a nostalgic choice for some enthusiasts and serves as an archival format for old home movies.
